Need Help! Stuck in 4Hi

Out wheeling today. Pretty easy sand trails. Tried shifting from 4lo to 2hi. Got to 4hi and the shifter felt like the linkeage fell off. The shifter moves with no resistence ( I can move it with one finger ).
Tried to look underneath but couldn't see anything or feel anything.
Does the shifter come through the floorboard or just the linkeage? Can you get to it by pulling the councel?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my daily driver and it's stuck in 4hi.

The linkage bushing underneath popped off. You will new I reach under there once it cools down and shift the lever into 2hi manually. I don't have a specific link, but just search the forum for the shifter cable bushing. I use a zip tie under there on mine to keep it in place.

Yeah, if the clip fell/broke off on the transfer case end (most common place) then it's a quick & easy fix. Just remember with the t/case skid plate to only remove 3 of the 4 bolts, loosen the last one & then just swing it out of the way to gain easy access to the linkage. The skid is heavy & if dropped completely is hard to jostle back into place with one hand while on your back in the dirt while trying line the bolt holes up if you're working on it by yourself (trust me on this!).

If the clip's gone at the shifter end then it's more of a PITA as you have to remove the centre console to get to the linkage.

I take it this is not a common issue?

Actually it is one of the most common problems, surprisingly. The linkage is pretty weak.

Got it fixed today. Can you believe BOTH bushings were broken! Had the wife move the shifter so I could make sure the cable was moving freely before I hooked up the transfer case end and the cable didn't move at all. Pulled the center console and sure enough, that one was broken also!:eek2:

What did you do to fix it? What kind of bushing or mod did you use?
