Odd engine noise when starting
There's a number of noises that can happen on startup.
- Valvetrain noise due to bad anti-drainback valve in oil filter
- Cracked exhaust manifold.
Not mentioned yet:
- Piston slap.
My 07 3.8 w/127K miles has been slapping this winter season. It's kind of obnoxious. It's more rapid than valvetrain noise, and has a bit of a clank to it. It usually fades out after a minute or two of running.
GM v8's are notorious for piston slap. I owned two of them; the noise is very familiar.
Valvetrain noise is half crank speed, and kind of a funny hollow-ish sounding tap.
Cracked manifold will, in my experience, "pop" and sounds different than piston slap when listening through the firewall.

My 2010 so far so good, hasn't ticked or tocked, she purrs like a kitten and drives like a turtle. Here on LINY we have been experiencing some very cold temps low teens -4 with wind I have been getting some ruff cold starts. No banging or knocking just a ruff first in the morning turn over and using the chrysler recommended oil 5w20 to me this stuff is water it is so thin, I strongly don't think this oil is any good for any cold weather. I think this oil is the cause for a lot of ticking that some jeepers are/have been experiencing.

At this point, I've tried 5 different oil filters in 10,000 miles. All for naught since it still ticks like it's going out of style anytime it sits for >6 hours in 40F or less. So either I've had a REAAAALY bad stretch of luck with regards to filter ADB diaphragms or that's not the root cause of the loud ticking. I don't buy going to 0w-20 or 10w-20 will do a bit of good either...that should be considered a band-aid at best.
I haven't heard from my Chrysler since Wednesday, so I'll try calling for an update Monday...
Much appreciated!
Did you have to stay on your dealer to ultimately get a "fix" initiated? I was almost rushed out of the door (should have maybe told me something right there) and told me that now that it's in "the system", it's documented if anything were to come up warranty/tsb/recall-wise. The service desk guy wouldn't divulge any more information beyond - "STAR says it's normal, they recommend changing to a MOPAR filter"
I have one Jeep dealer in town (whom this is all revolving around) and one about 30 minutes away in my arsenal, so I want to walk the fine line coming to a mutual resolution...I don't know if I should be complaining that the dealer didn't fight for me more, or if I'm right complaining to Chrysler that STAR blew the dealer's inquiry about my issue off.

no, no problems at all. dropped it off over night they looked at it the next day and they called and said the parts were ordered I can either pick up the jeep and drive it till the parts come in or I can leave it. So I just left it there and drove one of my other cars. ( which sucks because were supposed to get snow and ice the rest of the weekend so I am told)
Sounds like you have a pretty outstanding dealer network in your area...be glad
Hey guys, im from South Africa and own a '07 Jk 3.8 and I got the same noise! When I did some fault finding i started the jk while engaging the clutch and started it without.. It sounds like the release bearing to me.. Try it and listen whether it works?
I know a few vehicles that makes the same noise and go for years without replacing, but I'm definately replacing mine with the next service and maybe with a better bearing manufacturer.
Kewl, hope this helps

Sorry to revive this thread but did the ticking noise ever get solved and if so what was done to resolve it? I just developed this noise after changing oil to K&N 1002....

but if he didn't mod it out prob be coverd under warrenty dealers hate to see lifts so they will say its normal till he fixes it himself id imagine
