Default Oil Leak

Hello All!

Just recently have noticed a small oil puddle under the Jeep, sized about a half dollar after parking all night. The leak has been happening regularly now for the past week and I observed and cleaned the whole oil pan as the perimeter of it seemed to be wet and then, while driving, seemingly spraying onto the rear main seal area and dripping from there once I park. Has anyone had issues with the oil pan gasket failing prematurely or after switching oil types or anything of that nature? I currently run 5W-20 AMSOIL Synthetic. I've bought a new oil pan gasket already to swap in there on friday since I have the day off in hopes that it will cure my issue, but just wondering if this could be a progressive issue to be on the lookout for... It's an 07 JKUSahara.

Thanks for any help or pointers!

I've heard of oil leaks developing on engines that have been run long term on Dino oil and are then changed to synthetic. I run synthetic 5w/20 in mine, and have for the last couple of years, and haven't experienced any leaks at all. Are you sure your leak isn't migrating from somewhere higher on the motor and not at the oil pan seal. Just a long shot but have you checked to make sure your oil filter is seated properly? I've seen oil, as well as coolent from around the bottom of the water pump, migrate from there with almost no visible signs when viewed from the top and end up dripping in other areas further under the Jeep... and in both cases they accumulated around the oil pan seal.

Didn't some 07s have an issue with weeping bell housings?? Anyone remember that? A casting problem....???

As TQ1 mentioned, its has been reported that switching to a synthetic oil sometimes exposes minor leaks in sludged-up engines because of the cleansing action of the detergent pack.

(synthetics can have higher concentrations of detergents than conventional oils because they have less or no need for viscosity improvers in their add packs)

Casting issues eh? Lovely... I bought the Jeep used in Surprise, AZ back in Feb 2011...had 30K on the clock and now I'm up to 51K...

I hadn't noticed any leaking coming from higher up, one of the places I looked at was teh oil filter since I change my own fluids I thought maybe i hadn't tightened it enough or properly aligned it perhaps. Things look good on that end but I'll have to try and check out the water pump area really good again too. At any rate as a precaution I'll go ahead and drain the oil (just about time for a change anyway, drop the pan and hope for the best!

Any other thoughts or ideas or pointers towards possible defects is greatly welcomed!
