Default Painting the awful chrome parts black

I've tried posting a thread looking for someone to trade my chrome gas door and tail lights with for a black set. No takers, go figure!
So did anyone paint those pieces black and what products did you use to prep and paint?

Here is a link that may give you some idea's. It more on painting the stock alloy rims, but may give you some idea's to prep the door and types of paint people have used.

Also, use the search and type in painted wheels as there are several threads on this that could help with your fuel door!

If the parts are metal then you really could just scuff them up then hit it with rattle can black (easy touch-ups too).

Yup! ...or even some dupli color bedliner for a strong, textured look.

At the risk of being the wise guy here, if you don't like the chrome couldn't you just take it off?

When I've painted chrome parts in the past I've sanded them lightly & then applied a coat of etch primer first (to make the topcoat adhere well), then finished with the topcoat(s) next.

If you just spray topcoat straight on chrome without any preparation it tends to scratch easily or just just peel off after a while.

Thanks for the tips, I'll give it a go next time I get bored. I'm thinking of painting the pieces matte black and filling in the recessed Jeep logo on the gas door with matching bright silver paint. I think that will look good.

I feel your pain, mine had some dealer installed chrome, including the grill, which I could not dicker out of. That was in 2008 prior to the heavy rebates and them giving the Jeeps away.
