Rattle/Squeak/Tapping
I've searched all the threads regarding rattles and squeaking noises and none describe my problem...:naw:
Anyway, is anyone in JK land getting what sounds like a rattle from the suspension (mine is stock). It sounds like a metal on metal rattle and is coming from (what sounds like) both sides of the Jeep. I went wheelin' and developed this annoying as pi$$ rattle. There is no noise on smooth pavement, but if I hit a bump or do any trail riding it starts up...constantly. It' just enough to aggravate the hell out of you. I had a co-worker of mine who is a Vehicle Maintenance NCO and 4-wheeler himself, ride and listen and then climb under and take a look. His initial guess was a loose heat shield, but nothing serious. We pushed on and pulled everything under the Jeep and couldn't find anything loose or something that would reproduce the noise... I'm thinking its the springs, or something suspension related but who knows. The reason why I say this is due to it only occurring on bumps or rough terrain and when I rock the Jeep by hand, I sort of get the same noise, but of course it sounds different than while driving.... Does anyone have any idea? I'd appreciate any input... Thanks in advance!!!! |

Bowski,
I installed a 2.5 TFlex with shocks, then went and did some hard wheeling. After the fact, I had two clanks up front in the suspension and one in the rear. The front two I tracked down to the upper bolts and nuts on the swaybar links. They both were loose, just enough to clank up and down. I had not loosened the top nuts, just the bottom. The rear was a loose lower shock mount. Hope this helps Hooked |
Thanks for the replies!!
I don't think it's the seatbelt or door, who knows, will check anyway. I'll also check on those sway bar links...but the sound is more of a rattle than a clunk. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Thanks again! |
hey man, some of us on here have slop in the drivetrain (myself included) and it makes a clanking or metal on metal sound during a firm shift or hitting a bump. You have an auto or the 6spd? It kinda drives me crazy but I came up with a solution! Get a loud exhaust! :yup: Doesnt bother me nearly as much anymore!

FOUND IT!!!!
Discovery: Rocked the Jeep by hand, pinpointed rattle... Culprit: Loose sway bar - end link connection. Fix: A little tightening and some Loctite. Cost:   Result: No more rattle and smile back on my face... Thanks to those who offered their suggestions... WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!! |
scraping metal sound
I might have the same thing. A scraping metal sound that at first I thought was a brake issue. It has subsided after a 1000 miles. But now is intermittant. While looking for it I produced a similar sound by tapping (and therfore vibrating) the dust shield inboard of the brakes.
