Default Rear Differential Leaks?

Just out of curiosity, how severe is a rear differential leak usually? Is it a simple fix (remove cover... clean... apply liquid gasket, refill lube and go?), or is it something more intense?

I don't have noticable drips, but around one or two bolts I see some "Wet Stains" along with a little Staining around the lower edge. I've never taken it into a situation where it could've hit something (Mostly highway and a few dirt trails...). So I'm curious as to why it would be showing any stains

Seepage is not uncommon on any diff case regardless of the maker. One drop of diff lube will spread out and cover your whole rear end. if it's just a minor seepage it probably would not lower your lube level in a month of Sundays. If you get it redone it will probably seep again...Boy! Does this sound negative!LOL

It's one of the few leaks that isn't expensive if there is a leak. For highway use I wouldn't worry about a little seepage, but if you take it off road you'll want to correct it. Otherwise, that's just one more area for contaminants to get in.

My recommendation: buy a Lube Locker gasket (available from Northridge 4x4) and clean it up. WOL has a write-up on here for changing differential fluid.

RubyJeep, the 08, had an actuall dripp comming from both front and rear, found out that Rhonda, The owner/driver, drives off-road via braile so she was dragging both diffs. I got her new Riddler diff covers and painted them red and had them installed while our Jeep Tech Guy was looking at them for a "warranty diff leak" so got the fluid replaced while in warranty and now the front has about 2.5 quarts in it and slightly blowing it out the breather.

Got the Riddler diff covers here www.northridge.com , There NOT listed on the site but dave DOES have them in stock.

Hey jkkat I would drain that overfilled diff and refill with correct amount, it will eventually cause the pinion seal or axle seal to leak if you dont. I speak from experience my bonehead shop overfilled mine after I complained of gear whine, eventually it came out breather hose and pinion seal

if it is the original diff cover and sealant, then it may just be a case of poorly applied sealant at the factory; mine began leaking a few weeks after i bought it new; took it to the dealer-- they didnt seemed surprised at all by it and replaced the seal with a new one and sent me off in about 30 minutes. you have the life time warranty; might as well make use of it!

Yeah, i figured as much.... And yet another reason not to get a lift kit this summer .

Eh, who am i kidding... I'll just buy my bestop 1/2 doors... ride this 2007 out for the next 2 years... trade it in at graduation and buy myself a rubi. They should have most of the quirks sorted out by then, right???
