Default Rear end clunk (driverside)

Hey all!

I have been having this rear end clank when starting out, 1st,2nd or reverse, its not constant but when it happens its loud! Mostly sounds like its coming from the rear end driver side, dealers havent found or tried to find the clunk! Sounds almost like a spring that snaps back but everything is tight and the dealers h ave said th ey went back and tightened everything. I did have a friend just sit in the jeep and just release the clutch while i looked underneath and it looked like the rear end driveshaft would "slip" causing a knocking sound? Any ideas?? Bringing it in for the infamous ticking this week but thought id give you guys a shot! Thanks again in advance!

I would be inclined to suspect the ring gear. If everything on the rear suspension is tight, jack up both rear wheel off the ground. Inspect (both visually and for play) the u-joints. Then slowly turn the driveshaft in the driven direct a little bit at a time, stopping and starting. A broken tooth on the ring gear should show up this way. If you feel the driveshaft jump or take an extra rotation at a certain point then pull the cover and do a visual on the gears ... or, if under warranty, take it in and let them know what you found.

Ok so def looks like where the rear drive shaft meets the rear axle is "slipping" causing the loud clunk, i havent done any off roading or anything abusive so totally trying to figure out where the issue may lye! Quite frustrating! Would i only hear it once or would it be a continuous clicking if it was a broken tooth? Thanks for the advice guys!

A broken tooth, or two, will usually only show up as a noise when the pinion is lined up with the broken tooth when starting off. When moving everything is spinning and there isn't as much torque applied to a single section of the ring or pinion as when starting from a stop.

Broken teeth aren't necessarily something cause by offroading, it could be a manufacturing defect, inadequate hardening, improper gear setup or not full coming to a stop when changing from forward to reverse.

FWIW, my stock 08 has a double "click" like sound when accelerating from a dead stop, not always but occasionally. Reminds me of a loose wheel or lug nuts but have checked. I spent a lot of time underneath with my light looking for loose hardware, rust spots indicating something moving etc, nothing. Sounds like the drivers side.
