Default Remote lock when Jeep is running

Hi all,

It's getting cold here in Chicago and sometimes before I head out I like to warm the Jeep up for a few minutes. I have an extra key that I use to start it that doesn't have a remote on it, just the chip. Once I start the Jeep I get out, close the door, and I try and lock it with the key fob. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It won't let you use the switch on the door to lock when the door is open, and right now if I lock it with the doors close they all unlock when I open the door (I'm going to change this soon).

Does anyone know how to get the key fob to work every time when it's running? I have no problems when it's off.

Thanks.

Have to manually lock it with the key.

Man I love my remote start. Warm in winter, cold in summer.

I am right there with you...sometimes my 13yo daughter likes to hang out while I run in somewhere, or like you I wanna warm up the car. I have a different keyring on each key and while I haven't spent any time figuring it out my initial diagnosis for the problem is that one key may be the primary while the other is a secondary. Not positive though. I also had luck with turning the Jeep off when I get somewhere; turn it back on ; get out quickly ; close the door and hit the FOB lock button and it usually works. Thing is...I only use the secondary key in the ignition and use the primary key to lock it outside. Again....there is no really science to what I am doing and I don't even know if there is a primary or secondary key it just seems to work more often. I should probably have posted like you or really did a patient test with both keys in my free time.

Hope this is a start.

I think you're right about getting out real quick. Weird though. My Trailblazer you could use the key fob whenever.

I wish I had a remote start. That would be awesome, but I have a manual and have been in the habit all my life of parking with it in gear. It wouldn't take long for me to forget and leave it in gear. :(

On normal vehicles, there are safeguards to keep you from locking yourself out of the vehicle with the key in the ignition. I'm sure you can see how that would be a cause for concern. I don't understand why the Jeep would work sometimes, but not others. It should be consistant.

Right, which is why you can't use the power door locks when it's running and the door is open. However, every car I've ever tried it on you can use the fob since you obviously then have a way to get back in.

I just did a little experiment. It seems that if you depress the clutch just before you hit the lock button it will work.
