Default Is this rod knock?

Trying to identify a distinct ticking/knocking noise. I replaced both driver & passenger exhaust manifolds today as they were both severely cracked. I’m still getting a ticking noise. I’ll attach a video for reference. Trying to see if is it bearings/rods or something of that sort or something else. Happens when driving, idling while revving etc. Absolutely unsure.

Basically rod knock is fairly quiet when you first start the engine with cold oil/water. As it gets warmer the noise gets more prominent and increases with more power and oil pressure drops quite a bit.. Video has too much background noise to tell anything.

Vehicle has been sitting for a few hours, I will post another video now of under the hood & under the vehicle near the oil pan shortly! Thank you for the insight.

It does sound like it could be rod knock. I see you have an '07 model with the 3.8. Does you Jeep consume oil or have you been checking the oil?

My first JK was an oil consuming '07 that I sold with just over 50k miles on it but it still ran great. About a month after selling it the person who bought it from me called me and said it threw a rod while driving on the interstate.

I just purchased it about 2 weeks ago and have done an oil change since then. Didn’t notice any chunks in the oil when it was changed but it did smell burnt. I plan on dropping the pan and checking to see if the rods have any slack

Unfortunately it is a common issue with the 3.8s. If I remember right, Chrysler considers burning 1 quart of oil every 1k miles normal. These motors to tend to carbon up real bad and it can effect the valves etc. The Chrysler combustion chamber cleaner does a good job to help this. Also changing out your pcv valve can help, but it sounds like you might be heading for a rebuild unfortunately.

is there anything i can do to verify what needs to be rebuild? want to see if it's head or internals.
my plan was to drop the pan & check for play on the connecting rods & timing chain.
or maybe it's a collapsed lifter?

Dropping the pan is easy and quiclest way to confirm bottom end issues or not. Make sure you don't kick up a lot of dust while the pan is off. If you do rebuild get the van pistons and rods as they have the old style bearings and caps and have the larger oil ring. Check that spec first though but I think I am right.

in regards to checking, am I just to essentially shake the rod back and see if there’s play in it? What’s considered acceptable?
