Default Scratched windshield on delivery... Buff, what?

Some background...

I got my 08 last week. Im sure most of you are aware of the happiness it brings to finally get your jeep. And like so many I saw problems right off the bat. Albeit, on the way home of course. But I decided to take it like a man, not be a complainer, and accept that it is a jeep.

Well, I'm now interested in getting one of the problems looked at. While allowing the wife a joyride the other day, I noticed what looked like strands of hair on the windshield in front of the passenger. I quickly investigated to find that it was some sort of glue/butyl rubber... Kind of like after gluing, the gun was pulled back and some excess was left. I took my thumb and removed it all, except one. Which was actually a long, paper thin scratch. About 8 inches...

Buffing?...

After a few phone calls to my dealer, and finding the right person to talk to, the service manger said that they will have a glass repair shop try to buff it out under warranty. Has anyone heard of this? I have not, but I welcome the idea, since there are already talks about TSBs referring to windshield installation.

Thoughts?

My windshield has scratches in it. Must be the cheapest glass allowed by DOT. I have never had scratches in my GM, VW, or other vehicle windshields.

Must be "A Jeep Thing."

You CANNOT buff out scratches in glass. you Can temporarily fill them in (if they are minor enough) with a proper glass polish but this does not last and usually causes streaking. Any agent that is abbrasive enough to "buff" the glass, would cause even worse scratching. i do agree that the glass in the jeep seems to be of poor quality and that it does scratch and chip very easily.

Well, whatever the outcome... I'll do my best to document it for anyone who is interested. Thanks for the replies.

Have them replace the glass! In Florida our insurance replaces or will fix your wind shield free of charge. I once and them fix it and a short time later I had glare in that spot so I had them replace it.

I noticed scratches on my windshield when I bought my JK. I just never did anything about it.

UPDATE:

Ok, they had a glass repair/installer come to my work. He used a cordless drill, along with some orange powder (the name is hard to remember, if needed I can locate) and what appeared to be some sort of buffing pad/foam.

Well, apparently you CAN buff scratches out. I am VERY happy with the outcome. What started as what looked like a 8" long strand of hair is now gone, all in about 15 minutes.

Coincidently, he mentioned that replacing the windshield was a very hard thing to do. Mainly because of the way DC designed the "gutter/seal" around the glass... He agreed the buffing was a much better solution.
