When you choose a gear in the 2012s, thats as far as it will shift.

IE: put it in 2nd from a dead stop and it always starts in 1st gear, shifts to 2nd and won't shift any further.

I have this trans in my 2010 GCSRT8 ... so, what I'm reading, if you select 2nd at a dead stop it reverts back to 1st and then automatically shifts to 2nd and then won't upshift to 3rd? That's the way my 1991 AW4 works.

I would like to see the 2012 owners manual .. autoshift is supposed to hold each gear and YOU shift it manually at will, through all the gears...

.

Mine does the same thing. I just figured that it was normal...
First gear till around 3k RPM then second for only a quick second or two and into third gear.

I just did this. Started from a dead stop in 2nd, and it stayed in 2nd from a dead stop.

Also, I don't have any real noticeable compression braking in regular Drive mode.

This is not how the transmission works. It is not an autoshift, it's an electronic range select meaning the gear chosen is the highest gear the transmission is allowed to run in unless over revved. This is why there isn't an O/D Off button on this transmission.

Try it out by putting it in 4th and taking off from a dead stop. It will shift through the gears as normal but won't shift into 5th.

Ok, first broken 2012 tranny I've heard of.

Or is that some fancy triptronic tranny option I've never heard of?

So it appears yours works.... I'd upload the manual that describes the Autostick features, basically it allows you to upshift and downshift manually at will. When in Autostick mode, it will automatically downshift to 1st gear for you. It also allows you to start in 2nd gear from a standing start, if you put it in 2nd like you did.

Also, if you have it in Autostick or ERS and place it in 1st, it should shift to 2nd if you exceed a certain RPM... on my SRT8 is calibrated at 6100 RPM.

Same transmission in all three...

2012 JK Wrangler 3.6L ...
W5A580 AUTOMATIC, FIVE-SPEED OVERDRIVE. Adaptive electronic control or Electronic Range Select (ERS) driver-interactive manual control and electronically modulated torque converter clutch
2006-10 WK1 Grand Cherokee SRT8 6.1L ...
W5A580 5-speed automatic. Adaptive electronic control, Performance tuned AutoStick® driver-interactive manual control and electronically modulated torque converter clutch.
2005-10 WK1 Grand Cherokee 3.7L ...
W5A580 AUTOMATIC, FIVE-SPEED OVERDRIVE. Adaptive electronic control or Electronic Range Select (ERS) driverinteractive manual control and electronically modulated torque converter clutch.
