Default Short in inst cluster

Ok.. I'm new here and may have missed it but I've dug around and havent seen anything posted about this problem, so please any input/advice is appreciated.

I have a 08 Sahara with about 39,000 miles on it. The last month or two the gages have been going on and off, just like flickering and the needles drop etc. Nothing else eclectronic does, just the gage cluster. Radio doesnt flicker, dome lights etc.

Took it to a dealer and he said there is some kind of electrical short in the cluster itself and the whole cluster has to be replaced. Fine, but I'm not sure about what he's saying and this is my question to you guys.

Has anyone heard of this before? And he's telling me that when they put the new cluster in the milage willl go to 0, and they will have to put some kind of plate under the hood or on the door saying that the vehicle doesnt have the original miles listed, wont this ruin the resale value? Also he said with parts and labor I'm looking about about $1,100 for the repair.. does this sound out of line?

Thanks in advance..

I think the dealer has some BS going there. First the cluster isn't 1,100 and it takes about an hour to replace. Also the miles of the vehicle are not located or stored anywhere in the cluster electronics itself. I'd go to another dealer or order the cluster from an online mopar/Jeep parts dealer and replace it yourself.

My F250 cluster went out and the miles were stored on it. I wonder if this is true for the JK.

Thanks guys.. Maybe I mis-understood what he was talking about? Where is the mileage stored on a JK?

I'd like to have a little more knowledge as ammunition when I go back and talk to this guy, I'd hate to drop that kind of money to replace the cluster then have them go "Oh.. well I guess that wasnt the problem, lets try something else".

The 2nd opinion somewhere else is probably definitely worth the additional diagnostic fee then?
