Sluggish Auto Tranny
Have any of you had your auto transmissions be reluctant to upshift when its cold out?
I've noticed this a few times now when I start out in the morning. My transmission seems to not want to shift up from 2nd to 3rd especially at around 25-30 mph. After things are warmed up everthing seems to be normal.
I never noticed it before.
Time to go to the dealer?

This is common to any transmission, but the auto more than the manual.
Manuals will feel stiff untill warmed up and the auto will feel very sluggish,....depending on how cold it is outside and how long you let the warm up and circulate fluids before operating.
I spend a good few years of my life in the middle of the continent, a few hundred miles north of North Dakota in Manitoba and it can dip to -40 on occasion in January.
Makes sence that the ATF will be very very thick ad those temps and therefore wont be too responsive untill it warms & loosesns.
Best we can do is drive calmly untill it warms up abit. . . not sure if there are any thinner winter Tranny fluids out there.

Pretty normal symptoms for really cold weather.
I usually let 'er warm up for a few minutes before takin off. I also drive "gently" until things warm up/loosen up a bit. She'll let you know when she's good to go....

Good advice given in the previous posts. However, I have seen no sluggishness in my auto tranny, and it has been as low as negative 32*F here. The computer does make the tranny behave differently when cold. As the tranny warms up, it goes through a few different shift schedules. Perhaps this is what berg is seeing.
It would seem logical that the fluid gets thicker as the temps drop, but it seems to drip off the dipstick the same. If the ATF were to get "very very thick at those temps" the tranny would not work at all.
