Question Spare Keys..........

Has anyone with the power option got a spare key yet ? I would like to just get a plain spare key without the fob, to keep in my locker at work in case I lose my keys. Went to a dealer ( not where I bought my jeep ) , he said you can't buy the plain key . Said I have to bring the jeep in and get it programmed to the new key etc. He also said using a key without the fob will screw up the cars computer system.
I've bought spares for GM cars at the GM dealer for 8 bucks, the new key with fob at jeep is a couple hundred.......Whats the deal ?
Thanks Clubber

Go to eBAY and search "wrangler key blank" and you will find a few vendors selling the blank you need for your JK.
You can get a plain key or "the rock" key. Prices range from say $11 to $20+. You take one of these keys, have the key cut and then using your original two factory keys you program your new key. Your owners manual gives instructions. If you have problem programming the key the dealer can do it with there computer. There is no reason you have to use a fobed key!

Here is one eBAY vendor selling the Rock..

You might want to search prior posts, someone already ordered the rock key and found out it doesn't work on the JK even though it was stated that it would. Dunno if that problem has been resolved but just giving you a heads up.

There are 2 different rock keys. One with the transponder and one without.

http://www.allthingsjeep.com/rockkey.html They come in 2 colors.

As long as you get one with the transponder, it will work.

I have two plus my original remote key, the dealer gave me extra since i bought the remote start and additional alarm through them, they had to computer program the keys. i heard they can be quite expensive ...... I too just needed one for my locker..as for someone getting from walmart , that would be good for opening the doors but shouldnt start the engine.......
