Steel Wheels
Anyone out there running 17" steel wheels? I know they are heavier than alloy, more cost efficient than alloy. What do you feel are the negatives, if any, have you encountered?
They way I've always heard it is that steel can bend easily, but can be potentially bent back into shape to hold air long enough to get you off the trail... the alloy is less likely to fail, but if it does, its going to be in the form of a crack - in which case, it's done for.
That being said, I've seen my fair share of bent steel wheels on the trail; in only two of those cases did they not have a spare - one was a light weight sand rail, and we were able to get it back into shape to hold air long enough to get it back (had to refill it again halfway back)... the other was a wj, and we ended up having to lend them a mismatched spare.

This first is is about 15" wheels, but has some good info.
