Taking Doors Off
 

Taking the doors off tomorrow. Seems easy enough. Anyone have some advice, tips, dos and don'ts for a newb?

Be sure to unplug the doors before removing them. After removing the door strap, don't let it swing all the way open or it will dent the cowling.

learning from everyone's mistakes should make this painless for you.

unscrewing the bolts below the hinges makes taking the doors off much easier.

for the plugs, just push that red thing to the side, squeeze then pull. no need to permanently break them off in frustration.

the doors are easier to carry if you put the windows down. of course you should do this before you unplug them.

the door-catch strap thingy should be the last thing you do when taking them off, and first thing when putting them on. otherwise you WILL dent the jeep. when you take the strap off, keep a hand on the door so it won't swing.

if you're bringing them inside, and have a screen door, make sure you lock it open before you get there with the jeep door in hand(s). :blush:

Yeah, im just gonna amen the rolling the windows down tip, cause it helps a ton. I didnt the first time i took them off a couple weeks ago and theyre a bit of a pain to get back on with the windows up. With them down it really helped and i got them back on no problems this past weekend.

x2 - last night I went around to each of the 4 doors to disconnect the electrical connectors (which can be a pain).... then i went around and connected each one to roll down the windows... :naw: My experience is those connectors can be a pain - there are some threads that have close-ups - it seems you have to make sure that red tab is pulled out all the way while pulling. Search some old threads for good pics...

Yeah, but I always struggled with those damned connectors. I just broke all of the tabs off (3 on purpose). Now it easy in, easy out. No trouble with them working loose either.

know where you want to put the doors down before you take them off. some cardboard or other surface is better than on concrete.

If the doors have never been off, maybe hit each hinge with some WD40 tonight so they are sure to slide off easily tomorrow.

watch out for belt buckles or rivets on jeans when picking up the doors, too.

make sure nothing is going to fly out while you're driving. (maps, floor mats, etc)

The best part about wheeling all day with the doors off is, well, wheeling all day with the doors off!

It's kinda cool when you hit the highway and you blow a cloud of dust out!

the very first time I took my doors off they were a bit hard to get off the hinges
I had to apply upward pressure on the door and swing it back and forth,
after it came off I took a finger tip of white grease and put it in the hole of the hinge.
after removing the little nut on the hinge I never put it back on.
