Default B&M has some answer

B&M has some answer

This is beneficial in cold climate areas to guard against lube system failure. Controlled by viscosity, fluid is returned directly to the lube circuit through bypass openings in the stacked plate core. As the temperature increases, more ATF is directed through the core. This highly efficient design combines improved protection against lube system failure with the required levels of optimal heat transfer.

My jeep was always giving me the hot oil warning when I was wheeling. So I added the B&M plate style cooler. It seems to have cured the problem. I know you can over cool but out here in CA I don't think it will be an issue.

It all depends where you live in Cal , some peeps live in the snow for 3 or 4 months a year

Good point, I live in LA and mostly wheel in the desert. I'm not gonna see snow very often. Of coarse we got a little on the way to Moab this year so you never know I guess.

I think you'd be talking Canadian or Alaskan cold to worry about the transmission temp being too low. I was averaging around 120 all winter with an Aeroforce (OBDII) reading. It shifted just fine. And it hadn't been above freezing here since before Thanksgiving.

A thermostat in the system would just be something else to go wrong. If it went bad, that could cause some major problems.

Great link on the tranny life page. This is the type of stuff I was hoping to have discussed here. I do not think that I will ever over cool here in the southeast, but I was curious if others have hit this problem when cooling there tranny. I did not use the B&M cooler so my desigh is s bit different but it is working really well. I don't have a tranny temp gauge but the tranny cooler lines were very hot and you could not leave you hand on them longer than a second or two after driving for an hour or so in the hills. Now it is way cooler on the return line I am sure the transmission is thanking me everyday . JOE>

I believe a thermostat is not in the system, it works off viscosity pressure, but I could be totally wrong about that !
