After some frustrating trips to the local dealer I finally decided to check into the forum some more and sure enough, found this thread https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/stock-jk-tech-12/engine-ticking-aargh-11497/ describing the "sewing machine" or rattle noise and pointing to a plastic steering grommet. Turns out mine was also the plastic steering grommet. Pushed it back in and no more noise! Still have to get a clamp put on it but will do that tomorrow.

The technician told me it was "spark knock"and it was normal. When I talked to the service manager he also said it was normal intake and alternator noise but at least didn't give me a stupid answer like a normal harmless knock.
