Anyone have any idea what this ticking noise is? Maybe I'm just being paranoid because I recently took my Jeep top and doors off for the Spring and have become more aware of the sound.

A lot of the valves tick. Mine tick when I first start it but after the oil thickens it goes away. You can YouTube it and you'll find umpteen complaints.

 

Is it the valves though? It doesn't go away after driving. I just pulled into the parking space at the movies a few mins ago (5 miles away), and it's pretty loud.

I have a 2010 jk that sounds identical to yours. I changed timing chain and oil pump thinking it was chain slap. I was sadly mistakin

 

Does the ticking start after the engine gets to normal operating temp like mine??

 

That doesn't sound real good. What oil are you using? I would definitely try a thicker oil like 5 or 10w30 and see if it quiets down.

 

I'm hearing about 5 ticks per second at idle. That sounds like how often a lifter gets an input from its cam lobe.
I have heard the same sound from a bad lifter, a worn cam lobe, and a broken rocker arm.

Listen at each valve cover and see if you can determine which side it's coming from.

 

So typically I use 5w20, but since I've taken my top and doors off for Spring and started becoming more aware of it, I decided to do a "Motor Flush" and changed the oil to synthetic 10w30, but it doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect.

The reason why I was thinking it was the timing chain, was based off that one youtube video that sounds almost identical to it. =\

I'm thinking of picking up a mechanics stethoscope to try and zone in on the noise.. it SEEMS like it's coming from the bottom end, which correlates with the timing chain.

 

Silverfox, did you ever figure out what the sound was or are you still ticking away?
