Towing question - 4dr towing a lifted 2dr
 

I searched around to see if this topic has already been posted, but was unable to come across anything.

It looks like I may need to drive across country here soon and I will likely be taking both of my Jeeps. I have a stock 2015 4dr JKU and a lifted 2010 2dr JK (35in tires).

Will I be able to tow my 2dr JK with my 4dr without any issues? Was wanting to rent eother a U-Haul "Tow Dolly" or an "Auto Transport."

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Was just searching for that thread too. I'd submit also, a small dingy is going to be WAYYYYY lighter than the "auto transport".....but you're likely to have similar issues strapping the tires.. That might be the option I'd look at. I will also tell you that I tow lifted 4dr behind a motorhome. I recently experimented with towing that 4-down behind my wife's Armada with the same towbar I use with the motorhome. It scared the BEEJEEZUS out of me! There is more play in a towbar like that than with something that has a fixed tongue. It's not a big deal when behind a 35' motorhome, but when you're pulling with something that is a like size vehicle....holy cow it's kinda scary.

I had a friend do the tow dolly behind a large Uhaul truck with his 2010 4dr and we ran into the tire issue, the front axle with the aftermarket wheels and 35*12.5 tires was too wide for the dolly. He ended up putting stock tires on the front to be able to use the dolly.

Didn't even think about the width, was just considering the height. Man, nothing is easy as it should be. :naw:

Uhaul has some strict policies, if you choose to tow a jeep with a jeep it would be a good idea to check with them ahead of time. When I was renting a trailer, they asked for specific tow vehicle information so they could double check the mfg tow ratings vs trailer size and expected load, and wouldn't rent to me with a soft top installed.

Depending on your gears your tow rating is either 2,000 pounds (3.21 gears) or 3,500 pounds (3.73/4.10 gears)
A stock 2 door Jeep weighs around 4,000 pounds without a dolly or trailer, yours might be closer to 5,000 if you have mods. .

Given the specs, and the fact that Jeeps tow like crap, I'd say don't do it. Or maybe this is the excuse you need to pick up a Gladiator...??? :)
