Towing Weight
 

Anybody pushing the vehicles towing capacity? I towed a small utility trailer this summer (Mowing), no problems at all, but I want to buy a boat and the weight is about 4500# give or take a couple of hundred pounds. Mostly about 25 miles. On occasion maybe 150 miles.

I can tell you this, I have an 04' dodge dakota 2wd reg cab pickup, very similar in specs to an unlimited. My p/u has the 3.7 v-6 and 5 speed. just a year ago i did and Hot tub concrete base for a customer useing a U-haul type 1 yard concrete trailer, it weighed about 5000Lbs. Tough on starting up hill and braking down hill but other than that it was ok. I would NOT due it everyday and i had put on slotted rotors and heavier duty brake pads, It really needed trailer brakes.

The boat trailer WILL have trailer brakes!

Electric brakes or no, I wouldn't suggest it. It will weigh the same of more than your Jeep and even on smooth roads it could get away from you. Then add cross winds, going down hill around a curve and you just might get to meet your guardian angel up close and personal.

150 Miles might prove to be very exhausting.

i would recommend trailer brakes as well and a good controller. don t just get any cheap piece of junk, spend the money and get a good one. my brother in law has a 2 dr w/ 2.5" TF BB and 35's and he tows a 4500 lb boat with not really any problems.

my boat is about 3500# and the JK does just fine... our trip to the lake is about 60 miles with about half 70 mph straight stuff then twisty hilly 55 mph, and the jeep does it all without complaint. I don't do it regularly, but about twice a year we do this trip with the boat trailered. I can see that it wouldn't be a big deal to keep the boat at the house once our slip lease is up.

That and in an accident you could be held liable.

I towed a Ford F350 with no problem, just across town. Was very slow up hills and not exactly the safest thing I have done but the Jeep did great.

I have a enclosed 4X6 trailer that I commute 80km a day and usually pretty loaded 1500-2500 and wished I had some electric brakes on those days when a rice rocket pulls in front in a hurry, but I do go over the skyway everyday with ease but am very cautious and think any heavier and I wouldn't dream of it without EB assist when pushing the limits (don't tell your dealer)

When I pcs back to the states I plan on getting a ski boat so I am wondering the same thing. IS a 4500# boat a ski boat or is it bigger?
