Towing Weight
Limits are limits and liability is liability. If you are will to risk everything you own on the chance you will never have an accident related to excess weight, by all means go for it. Doesn't seem worth the risk to me.
Maybe I had too much to drink but what does this mean? Not sure I see any towing facts in here, unless you are saying that the JEEP is not suppose to tow a damn thing. Is that what you are trying to say?
I think he's saying that over-exceeding the manufacturers towing rating (which is what this thread is about) is potentially risky.
Towing a 4500lb trailer would be a tough trip. The other day I hooked up a car trailer that was around 900-1000 lbs and overloaded it with a bunch of restaurant equipment (industrial freezers, dishwashers, racks/shelves). The acceleration of my unlimited (4.10 - towing package) surprised me on flat ground, it pulled like a champ, but going up hills is ugly. The Jeep has problems shifting down without red -lining, occasionally I got nervous that the engine was gonna blow.
I don't want to get involved in an argument. I read somewhere that since there are less strict regulations in Canada that the JK's up there are rated for something like 5500 lbs or more. I'm not sure if that is in reference to the diesel engine, but it's something to look into.
p.s. be safe and use good judgment.
I won't find out till spring about towing with my sahara, I have got a 6.5x10 enclosed Alum. motorcycle trailer that I hall my Harley with when we go to bike week.
The trailer is about 1100lbs with Elec. Brakes and V-Nose. If I load the bike into it I would est. total weight at about 1900lbs. So I hope that my Jeep will be up to the task...........

The 2007 manual up here says
------gears - gross trailer weight - tongue weight
4dr - 4.10 - 3500 lbs(1587 Kg) - 350lbs 159kg
4dr - 3.21 - 1000 lbs(453 kg) - 100lbs 45kg
2dr - 4.10 - 2000 lbs(907kg) - 200lbs 91kg
2dr - 3.21 - 1000 lbs(453kg) - 100lbs 45kg
I have 4dr sahara 4.10 factory tow which is a class II hitch also rated for 3500 lbs (1587 kg) not sure what the 2008 is rated for

I pull my 21 foot 3500 pound ski boat with a surge brakes trailer, once a weekend in the summer, 50 mile round trip to the river and back.
I have 5.13 gears and 35" tires and it pulls it just fine, up hill, down hill, with 4 people in the Jeep, it doesnt matter.

Saw one on the way to the river where the boat came loose and skidded down the freeway a couple hundred yards and his the dirt meridian and finally dug in. It was a sickening sight, felt real bad for the people that lost it.
I've done chancy things myself, especially when towing. I would never do it with the family in the vehicle if it was over rated. One wild and wooley jack knife all over the freeway was enough for me. I still tow, but with fully proper equipment.
