Towing without tow package

Has anyone towed a camper or a boat with a JK without the 373 gears? Thinking of buying a boat or pop-up camper. It was a pretty long wait to get the 373's so i settled for the stock gears.

You say without the tow package, did you add the hitch later? If so what did that run you to get installed with the wiring harness etc?

Do you mean 4.10 gears? that's what comes with the tow package in the 07's.

If he has an 08 it will have 3.73 gears (with tow package), except for the Rubicon which still has the 4.10s.

Here's a guide for you:

humm....interesting number off the jeep towing guide.

a 2d X auto can tow 1k lbs...but a 2dr rubi auto can tow 2k lbs..due to axle ratio. I guess my 07 x w/4.10's can tow what the 08 rubi is rated...

i wouldnt have thought a slight increase in gear ratio would allow a vehicle to tow double. (3.73 - 4.10)

If you have a manual tranny, yes. If you have an auto, becareful about tranny over heating. Also, you need to consider what type brakes the trailer has. A boat trailer will have surge brakes and a camper would have electric which requires a brake controller and is actually a good thing.

The link does not give an option for this (because the link is just referencing the '08's and the '08 X does not have a 4.10 option). So I have to use the Rubi option in order to reference the 4.10... So on the link I just checked it both ways-

1) Unlimited X (3.73) with tow package = 3500lbs
2) Unlimited Rubi (4.10) with tow package = 3500lbs

No difference

The 4.1 will just do it "easier" than the 3.73 will at the lower speeds. If it were the 3.21, it would be a different story. :rotflmao1:

With the stock 3.21 gears, my '07 2 door JK - X is limited to 1000 lbs.

I have an '07 2 dr X. I have the 4.10 gears and according to my manual I can tow 2,000 lbs.

I have towed trailers and boats in the past with my truck and I was well under the max tow weight limit.

My question is this....I am thinking about getting a tent trailer. The trailer weighs in at 1400 with a tongue weight of 150. All within my Jeep's specs.

Do you think I would need a tranny cooler?

I know the motor is strong enough since the same setup in a 4 dr is 3500 lbs so I assume the issue with my Jeep is stability with the short wheelbase.
