Transfer case play
How much play should i have in the rear side of my transfer case??
i can move it my hand enough to make it clank pretty good.if i'm driving at low RPM's especially in 2nd gear i can hear a pretty loud clank, and sometimes it is followed by a ticking.
My rear drive shaft feels sturdy and like i said when i move it back and fourth by hand you can hear the clank coming from the transfer case or maybe the standard transmission.
the front makes no noise at all but its also not a stock driveshaft.the rear driveshaft is stock.(unlimited)
any ideas on what i might need to check would be helpfull.
I have searched threads over the last couple of days and couldn't find much on this. thanks again (in advance ofcourse)

Let me add that it only clanks sometimes when i accelerate or let off the gas when i'm at low RPM's in too high a gear. And yes i know this is not a good common driving pratice but once i heard the noise i tried to recreate it and this is when i'm hearing it.

well i just got through jacking up the rear and turning the tires by hand. i can really hear the clank in the transfer case/transmission area whenever it starts to turn the driveshaft. I guess i'm going to be calling the dealership. any ideas on this before i talk to them?
Just wanted to bump this and add that my Jeep does it as well. Driving part throttle in lower gears in mid rpm range if I let off the gas it makes a clunk noise. Also happens when you get on the gas. I crawled under and could rotate the driveshaft maybe 3/8". I don't know if its normal or not and would like to get some feedback as well.

Well, a little play and clunk is normal. what mine is doing is not normal by any means. The clunk has gotten louder and it is shifting hard now kinda like a slipping trans. but i have a manual tranny which should not slip.most likely the clutch I think. i took it to the dealership this morning and driving the 20 miles there it got alot worse.it is also making a rotation noise almost like really bad u-joints but i don't remember u- joints making that bad of a noise.i should hear back for the dealership today i hope. Right now i'm thinking the best case is a bad u-joint and the clutch is going out. I post up when hear back for the dealership. This dealership has been really good to me in the past and very honest which is more that i can say about the other 2 dealerships i have dealt with in the past.
well something was wrong but it wasn't in the tranny or transfer case.they are telling me that the rear diff. is grenaded and the sound was just comming up the driveshaft and thats why it sounded like it was comming from the tranny area.I haven't seen it yet but will be picking it back up in the morning then i will be able to see what kind of damage has been done.
they will not cover it under warranty and they want almost 3k to replace it with a new factory rearend.yeah like thats going to happen.
