Here's a write up that some of you may find helpful someday.

If you ever notice that your shifter for your transfer case is slack and you can't switch into 4wd, likely the culprit is the bushing that attaches the linkage/cable to the shifter. First of course get under your Jeep and make sure the linkage is connected down there to the transfer case. If indeed everything underneath looks good you'll want to look under the center console. This is good news because replacing this bushing is dirt cheap and pretty easy.

1. Start by removing the four T30 bolts that hold the center console in. They are the largest ones.
2. Put your ebrake in the locked up position. I mean ALL the way! Otherwise it will be a bear to remove the center console. When you think you've pulled up all the way, try it again!! All the way!
3. You'll need to remove the transfer case shifter knob. This can be difficult. Run a search and you'lll see. The trick is to rotate AND pull. I learned this from this awesome forum for JK owners

6. Remove the black centermost panel of your center console. You will need to slide the gearshifter boot into the hole in the part of the console you are removing. This will make removing the center console much easier as you will better clear the ebrake

12. WORD OF ADVICE: Press the bushing (I used a pair of channel locks as it's quite difficult to do by hand) into the black plastic ring of the linkage cable first, THEN press that into the metal shaft of the shift assembly. I did the reverse and if you do that, the bushing will be impossible to press into the black circle.

Nice writeup. Glad you got this sorted out. Makes me want to toss an extra bushing into my Jeep bag - just in case.

What year is your Jeep? I had that problem with my 2009 but not with my 2012.

2008 and my searches revealed that it was a common occurance. I can only imagine that after all of the forcing of the shifter both at Rausch Creek and then later after the transfer case was fixed and i was able to put into 4low it must have strained the bushing.

Great timing! Mine busted yesterday while going from 4L and left me in N. The other end went last year while under warranty and the dealership said they replaced the whole cable.
Good news is: I knew what the problem was and took the console apart and shifted into 2H.
Thanks for the part number!!!!

For the price we pay for our Jeeps and how critical this little part is, we would expect that Chrysler did a decent engineering job there...

The trick to getting the bushing in is to put it in hot tap water for a couple of minutes. Then put it through the cable end and on to the shaft last.

I was struggling until the hot water. I went together I was pissed because I hadn't thought of it earlier.
