Default Transmission Fluid Mystery

Want to change my manual tranny fluid on my 2013 JK (NSG 370) but I've ran into contradictory fluid requirements. I called four dealers and two told me my tranny used ATF+4 and two other dealers told me to use 4874464 or MS-9224. Then the fifth dealer told me that they've seen this before and to put whatever fluid was put at the factory. DO NOT MIX THE TWO. Anyone have this issue? By the way the fifth dealer told me to check by sticking my finger in the fill port and see what color the fluid is. Red ATF+4 Dark Brown MS-9224. I already did both diffs 80W90 and the transfer case ATF+4. Now to solve the tranny issue. By the way, my JK is Canadian made...

Here, page 620. I keep a copy of my own on my computer, phone and tablet ...

Be cautious torquing the drain port down. The housing extension is thin and easily cracked. It cost me a new transmission to not realize that. And I would not mess with the transmission unless you've actually hit the mileage, or have contamination (from water fording). In fact, while your manual probably says to change it at 100K miles, my own (2007) says the transmission is lifetime lubricated. Which is what all of my previous manual transmission vehicles have said over the past half decade (and that's all I ever drive).

Definitely not ATF+4. Be sure if/ when you do this that you open the fill port first, then the drain. Getting the fluid out is easy but much tougher to fill if your fill port won't open.

Change it.

Pennzoil Synchromesh.

This is the junk that was in my 6 speed at 18K miles:

ETA: The transmission shifting was much smoother after the fluid change.

That definitely should not be like that (you likely knew that already), and does not duplicate my experience changing the fluid on two transmissions, both about 100K miles. The fluid came out as if new, virtually nothing but a little slime on the drain plugs.

You don't know until you drain it.

Cheap insurance at less than $20 to know exactly what is flowing inside your gearbox.
