Default What does the "heat shield" under the bumper do?

Is it necessary? After a day of some strong bouncing off road, mine is loose as a goose. Can I just take it off, or should I reinforce it so it doesn't jangle?
Thanks.

I see those posts too... they forget to say not only did they remove the airdam... they added a new front bumper, a winch, a lift kit, larger tires, etc...

If my memory does not fail me, I have seen posts to the contrary that the removal
of the airdam increased MPG. Mine is still on though but I will rip it out when installing my lift.
