What gear do I have?
Just bought a 2012 stock JKUS and not sure how to determine what gears were install by the factory. I have heard that some came with 4.10 or 3.73(or some number similar)
Thanks in advance. |
Thank Ronjenx for this...

In 2010, all Rubicons came with 4.10 gears. If you want to know if it still has 4.10 gears, do this: Jack one front tire off the ground. Put a chalk mark on the tire and the drive shaft. Rotate the tire by hand 2 complete revolutions while counting the drive shaft turns. The number will be your gear ratio. A little over 4 turns will be 4.10 gears.

you have either 3.21's or 3.73's. 4.10 only avail in a rubicon from the factory.

If you have the factory tow package....then prolly 3.73

My experience when shopping in 2012 for a 2012 jku here in NJ is that essentially zero specimens were available in a 200 mile radius that had anything other than 3.21 gearing (except rubis). I absolutely demanded the 3.73 because I knew I wanted to tow with mine. I ended up ordering my jku from the factory because the local dealers were unable to find one on a lot anywhere that had 3.73. With that said, the odds are that your jku has 3.21, but only way to know for sure is to get the build sheet. Tow package means nothing unless it was the max tow package, which came with the 3.73 rear as well as the sway control programming. There is no way to add the sway control programming unless it came from the factory with the max tow package.

If you bought the JK used, the build sheet will only tell you what it had from the factory. A previous owner could have re-geared it.
If you want to know what gears it has now, do this: Jack one front tire off the ground. Put a chalk mark on the tire and the drive shaft. Rotate the tire by hand 2 complete revolutions while counting the drive shaft turns. The number will be your gear ratio. A little less than 3 and 1/4 turns will be 3.21 gears. About 3 and 3/4 turns will be 3.73 gears. A little over 4 turns will be 4.10 gears. |

Well I finally found it. Go to jeep.com. Then click on contact us, then on the left side "your vehicle" click on equipment listing and input your vin. It tells you the basics but not more than you already know. Hope this helps others.
