Default Why put windshield down?

So I am extremely curious.....In what scenario would anyone actually chose to fold the windshield down? What do you gain by folding down the windshield? Its "neat" and all, and the heritage of it being something that military did is cool...but does anyone every use this function and for a reason? I would think the windshield would be more likely to crack or break when not firm and in an upright position....

I folded it down once on my old TJ. I just wanted to do it once for no reason. Din't like it either.
I suppose it would be handy on low speed safari trips like on National Geographic where the photographers have a clear shot across the Serengeti.

Makes sense...I guess if on a flat trail and sight seeing....would be nice for a more open view. I hadnt thought of that.

It is simply a carryover from the tradition on original jeeps. For military, folding a windshield and cage often helps for air transport.

The only reason I like having it is that if I roll the jeep I can unbolt the messed up windshield frame and put a new one on. Once they do away with te hinge it becomes a much bigger problem.

I think I'd be too lazy after reading all the steps involved in the manual but it is cool to know I could, even if I never do is my feeling. Is it true next generation will not have hinges??

If so I want to be ready with my new T-shirt line 'Real men have hinges" or "Hinges are Patriotic".

The reason they folded was primarily for stacking two-high on train cars leaving the factory. It was not primarily for any off road visibility.

Short answer is "because you can"

I can tell you it makes installing a cage a heck of a lot easier!
