Windshield Crack, does this sound like a defect or Impact?
I had the exact same thing - except mine was from road debris that impacted right below the wiper blade. At first I couldn't locate the impact point but did discover it like I said below the blade. After having the defrost on for a couple of days it had traveled up about 5 inches then went left and right across to each side. Just had it replaced for $240 - what was nice is the auto glass place did the repair in my driveway while I was at work. Came home had new glass and didn't have to take it to them...
The Basic Limited Warranty lasts for 36 months from the
date it begins or for 36,000 miles on the odometer,
whichever occurs first. But the following items are
covered only for 12 months or for 12,000 miles on the
odometer, whichever occurs first:
• brakes (rotors, pads, linings, and drums);
• wiper blades;
• clutch discs or modular clutch assembly (as equipped);
• windshield and rear window; and
• wheel alignment and wheel balancing

FYI - When you get the windshield replaced make sure you go to a shop that knows what they are doing. JKs do not have window trim to hide any paint chips or scratches. I got mine replaced and had visible chips and scratches down to the metal around 60% of the window frame. I had to have the frame resprayed at the expense of the lazy windshield repair shop.

To tell if it is from an impact run a ball boint pen on the crack. If it gets caught or you feel any resistance in a spot that is where the impact is that cracked the windsheild. Sometimes they are so small they aren't noticable without this method.
Had it happen to my Jeep last winter. Dealer did the "pen test" and did not feel the crack. Dealer replaced under warranty. No more questions asked. Funny thing? The replacement windshield looks to be better quality than the stock windshield.
My '06 TJ did the exact same thing, except it was slightly off center toward passenger side. I traded that one in on the JK. They replaced the windshield under warranty, it cracked when it was covered in ice and defrosters running. it could have been the ice scraper i was using as a hammer, but I didn't mention that, as there was no remaining evidence of that once the ice was gone.
