Default WTF! - Front Diff Leaking Oil

Ok so here is my story. I have a 2010 JK 4dr and it has exactly 3700 miles exactly on it, yeah i know still new haven't popped the cherry on it yet. So i work the night shift and today early this morning when i was getting off from work something told me to look under the Jeep. Well once i got under the Jeep guess what i saw? A FREAKING OIL LEAK I was tripping out bad, so i began to look around for the source of the oil leak, low and behold i noticed my front diff stain with oil and a drip just tittering off one of the bolts waiting to drop. Just to let you know thats when the case of the ass began.

I was so upset that i drove straight to the dealership from work with out even bothering to go home and change. Luckily for me the service department opens up at 0630 hours and i got there as they were opening up. I explained to the service rep what my boggle was (demolition man reference, just in case you didn't catch it) and he couldn't believe me. So i said "Take a look" sure enough after he came up from under the Jeep he went straight to the computer. I asked him what he thought and the service rep said, "Dont worry sir well got right on it and have it done immediately" In my head Im like, "Your damn F$@! right you get it done immediately" So the case if the ass is subsided a little.

Well the service rep asked me if i needed a ride home and i was like, "YEAH!" So she offered me the shuttle service. As Im getting my gear out of the Jeep I ask the service rep if there is a number i need to call or if the shuttle service going to be sent out once my Jeep is fixed. She looks at me and politely informs that its only a one way trip the shuttle doesn't pick up. The case of the ass begins again.

So now its just a waiting game and a matter of a not so simple phone call.

Damn dude ... you'd probably have a stroke if it was a real issue ... it's just an oil leak and a super easy fix ...

I knew a Harley driver that was like that. He had taken his new bike in a couple times for oil leaks. Once it was fixed, I went out and put a couple drops of oil on the ground under it.
He was all , and freaked out so bad I had to tell him what was going on.
I wouldn't have let him go back to the dealer with it anyway, but I figured I shouldn't let him stew over it at all.

Yeah, don't be too freaked out that your Jeep's only new & you have a minor oil leak. As many of the old hands here told me when I had a similar low-mileage leak on my rear pinion seal; if an automotive seal's gonna leak, then it'll often do so when new if the mating surfaces were not seated/prepared properly on installation or if all the bolts weren't torqued correctly.

In your case, it's one of the easiest ones to fix quickly & without fuss; many jeepers here pop the diff covers off periodically to check components or during diff-fluid changes which involves re-sealing the covers each time so it's a basic proceedure, with a similar level of diffuculty to changing the engine oil & filter. Sometimes the re-installed cover will leak & you have to pull it off & start again; no sweat.

Now if your head gasket or oil pan seal was gone after only a few thousand miles then yeah, I'd go nuts at the dealer's.

Take a chill pill. At least it's just the cover, quick and easy fix.

What I want to know is how the hell is your fill-plug so shiny and new looking?

Good question... looks like it's been replaced ... have you had service already done on your differential ??? Your axle actually looks pretty narly for 3700 miles and not having popped the cherry yet ... which I assume means you have never been offroad ..

Looks like a minor problem, doesnt even appear to have lost that much fluid. Oil tends to look like a lot more than it really is when it spreads out on a flat surface. I agree with the other guys, looks like it's already been serviced with the new plug in the cover.

Hey, don't be so pissed. You have the second 2010 Jeep manufactured this year. It says so in chalk on your front diff!

Now don't get even more pissed but my front diff looked the same, even had the ole hanging drip on occasion too but I'm glad I looked further up. The tranny cooler line leaks a bit and when your moving, the wind blows it onto the front diff cover. Looked just like yours.

I'm fine with it for now (17K) and it hasn't caught fire yet. When I replace the line it won't be with the same factory fitting that got all drippy in the first place.

At least your dealership acted like they cared and drove you home. They could have scheduled an appointment and brushed you off for a week. Your in for a lot of angry moments with this Jeep if that got you so worked up so good luck to ya. These vehicles have more personality than any modern vehicle I have ever owned.
