1. 2017 Jeep Scrambler

As a long time Jeep enthusiast who has owned a Laredo and a Grand Cherokee and now has an eye on the Wrangler, I was intrigued when Fiat-Chrysler announced that a new concept Jeep Wrangler pickup truck would be debuting in 2017. For several years now, I’ve admired the rugged styling and road warrior muscle of the Jeep Wrangler, but I have also appreciated the cargo capacity of pickup beasts like the Ford F-150. With the new Jeep Scrambler, I can have both in one vehicle.

2. Reagan and the Scrambler

Few may realize that this is not the first time Jeep has crashed the pickup market. In fact, in 1981, Jeep introduced the CJ-8 Scrambler with a 103-inch wheelbase and a removable half-cab.  Most Scramblers featured four or five speed manual transmission, but you could also get a three-speed automatic. Former President Ronald Reagan drove one on his California Ranch.

3. The Jeep Comanche

Next up was the Jeep Comanche (MJ), which was manufactured from 1985-1992. It offered rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive as well as cargo bed lengths of six and seven feet. The Cherokee and Comanche were the first Jeeps to use a Quadra-Link suspension system that included coil springs and upper and lower control arms. Due to low sales, only 190,446 Comanches were manufactured before Chrysler ceased production in June, 1992.

4. The New Scrambler

The latest generation Scrambler will feature a steal chassis with aluminum panels to save weight and increase fuel economy. Rumor has it that the Scrambler will sport a 3.6-liter V-6, a 2.0-liter turbo four, or possibly a diesel engine. It is likely that the pickup will provide options for a six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic as well as rear- and four-wheel drive.

5. The Cost

So, what’s the new Scrambler going to cost? It’s just guesswork at this point, but considering the competition, the fact that it will be produced alongside the next-generation Wrangler in Toledo, Ohio, and that it’s based on the Wrangler Unlimited, our best guess is that the price will start somewhere around $30,000.

I was looking to buy a Wrangler. Now I’m looking at the Scrambler. Thanks, Jeep. Thanks a lot.
