Luxury Before It Was Normal

Long before upscale SUVs became commonplace, Jeep experimented with the formula. The Super Wagoneer of the 1960s, an early offshoot of the Jeep Wagoneer and a precursor to today’s Jeep Grand Wagoneer, quietly introduced the idea that four-wheel-drive capability could coexist with premium trim. Wood accents, upgraded interiors, and an emphasis on comfort distinguished it from more utilitarian 4x4s of its era. Although its production run was brief, the model helped establish the blueprint for the modern luxury SUV segment.

Modern Muscle Swap

In its latest incarnation, courtesy of Vigilante 4x4, the Super Wagoneer trades its original powerplant for a contemporary 6.4-liter Hemi V8. The naturally aspirated engine produces 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft (644 Nm) of torque, figures that place it firmly in modern performance territory rather than 1960s cruising duty. Power is routed through a six-speed Tremec manual transmission, an increasingly rare configuration in high-output off-road builds. The result is a classic SUV with the responsiveness and output of a modern performance truck.

Reinforced Foundations

Accommodating that level of power required more than an engine swap. The build incorporates a custom-engineered four-wheel-drive system designed to manage the added torque, along with high-performance Baer brakes for improved stopping capability. The engine bay itself has been carefully detailed, with clean routing and a chrome-finished radiator supporting cooling duties. The mechanical overhaul moves the vehicle far beyond restoration, effectively reengineering it for contemporary use.

Lifted and Refined

Visually, the SUV remains faithful to its original proportions but adds subtle aggression. The exterior is finished in Flamboyant Blue, complemented by chrome accents that highlight its 1960s-era design cues. A suspension lift increases ground clearance, while updated wheels and all-terrain tires enhance off-road readiness. The stance suggests capability without straying from the Super Wagoneer’s original silhouette.

Updated Cabin Experience

Inside, period charm meets current expectations. A modern climate control system replaces dated hardware, and a Bluetooth-enabled audio setup integrates contemporary connectivity. Blue interior accents echo the exterior paintwork, tying the aesthetic together without overwhelming the vintage layout.

Forgotten No More

“This Super Wagoneer project embodies everything Vigilante stands for,” said founder Daniel van Doveren. “It’s a celebration of automotive heritage, but it’s also a bold statement about what classic vehicles can become when you apply modern engineering and craftsmanship. We did not simply restore this Jeep. We reengineered it to deliver an entirely new driving experience while preserving what made it iconic in the first place.”

Taken as a whole, the project illustrates how a largely forgotten 1960s SUV can be adapted for modern expectations, retaining its historical significance while delivering performance and usability far beyond its original brief.
