Jeeps on the Rubicon Trail (photos)

If you’re not already familiar with it, the Rubicon Trail is 22 miles long, part road, part 4x4 rock crawl, and very popular with off-roading enthusiasts. When Jeep says something is "Trail Rated" they are talking about this trail near Lake Tahoe, CA. Each year, thousands of off-roaders drive it to test their Jeeps on the tough trail conditions. Let's see how some of them did.

1. Boys weekend

There are several themed driving ventures that take place on the Rubicon Trail every year, put on by different clubs and organizations. In 2014, a group of friends including a writer for Automobile Magazine set out in new stock Wrangler Rubicons for a boys weekend. It was a baptism by fire for the off-road newbies, and you can read all about the trip here.

2. An Articulate Wrangler

No matter how much lift, tires, and upgrades one adds to their Jeep, there are some rocks and parts of the trail where you have to take it nice and slow. whatever amount of articulation you have, chances are you'll use it all. Stock Wranglers can make it, but expect to be balancing on just two wheels at times.

3. Traffic Jam

Follow the leader tours occur nearly every day on the Rubicon Trail, and traffic can be especially heavy on the weekends, as evidenced by this bit of a log jam. If you are a neophyte when it comes to boulder strewn trails and 4x4-ing, you might want to join one instead of going it alone.

4. Between a Rock and a Hard Place

If you’re not paying attention to where the trail is taking you, it’s very easy to get stuck or at the very least leave with some lasting marks on your prized vehicle. Having a full compliment of off-road tools, and a winch, is a good idea before you hit the trail.

5. Rock Out!

The rules are pretty limited on the Rubicon Trail – tread lightly, and just don’t hurt or destroy the local vegetation. The rocks, though? Feel free to play.

6. Get Wet

The trail is just a few miles from Lake Tahoe, and there are plenty of streams fed by melting snow from the surrounding mountains. There are plenty of spots along the Rubicon Trail to wash the dirt and dust off your Jeep.

7. Don’t Forget the Camping Gear

While it is possible to make it through the trail in a day, why rush a good thing? Pack some camping gear and spend a night (or two) on one of the most famous Jeep trails in the States! The air around Lake Tahoe is famously clear, and the night sky is simply amazing.

You can find the start of the trail at he red flag on this Google map.
