removing shift knob
Before I tear something up, does anyone know the proper way to remove thre factory shift knob. I am looking at putting something a little more ergonomic on.
Thanks,
Jim

I haven't tried it myself yet as I do not have a JK yet but if it's anything like the TJ's, you will have to pry off the shift pattern plate with a small screw driver in order to expose the nut securing the knob in place.

I remember reading that same thing, about 1 month ago, the new JK didn't have threads, was just pressed on. Sounds like we need someone who already has a JK to go do some yanking on their shaft (here we go again...). I can always try, on my next trip to the dealership, and yank on their shaft, not that I'm into yanking on shafts, mind you....

I checked the FSM and there is nothing about removing the transmission gear shifter knob.
For the transfer case shifter you just pull up and it comes off.
Everyplace they are doing something with the transmission gear shifter it has you removing the boot from the console (by just prying up with a trim price tool) and then removing the shifter from the transmission itself. There is one bolt under the boot to remove the entire shifter.
You could go by the dealer and ask them to look at the ordering information diagram. It should show the exploded parts diagram for the shifter.

Well, over the weekend I tried taking off my JK's shift knob, and couldn't figure out how, without destroying anything. I couldn't pop off the shift pattern plate, I pried hard enough to chip the plastic without any luck. I didn't get out the strap wrench to try turning the whole thing, but I tried to turn it with my hands and couldn't budge it. Hopefully the thing is threaded under there, but a press-on wouldn't surprise me too much, given the cost savings of not having to thread the thing.

This is a shot of my TJ's shift knob after removing the shift pattern...
As you can see, the nut securing it in place is underneath it and yes, it is a real pain in the but to remove the shift pattern.

Question is, are the JKs done the same way as the TJs were? Short of dissecting a shift knob on an '07, not sure how we can find out, since the service manual doesn't mention it! I really want a nice black anodized billet knob...
