Virginia is nice and being right off 95 will give you access to the entire state. Your kids will be close to the center of US government and rich history. The Quantico area is busy as it's a Marine rich area and just a short drive from DC, but still not a bad place. I'm in a much more rural area probably 3-4 hours south of Quantico.
Hiking is close by, there is abundant history here, and we've got fast access to just about anything you're looking for.

Thank you, I'm not sure how I feel about being that close to DC but that's where our opportunity is. A friend of mine used to live down there and was telling me about some "personal property tax " what is that all about?? I live in upstate NY and we get slammed with taxes on our overpriced homes like no other... just trying to get a grip on what we could possibly be in for.

Taxes aren't terrible. You do pay a tax on vehicles here but you can get the amount dropped significantly if you can prove that the value isn't there. My annual tax was $200 or something like that on my 2010. I took my recent inspection tag to DMV and they dropped it a little due to "excessive mileage".
I don't think our gas tax is quite what it is further north either. We're are $2/ gal here and I think the fluctuation was only $0.15-0.25 as you went further north. I used to date a girl in Woodbridge. That's a relatively quiet area with respect to how close it is to everything.

Cool deal on living there. Every one that has asked me, has said the same thing (lived there). Air Force are ya?

I was! At the time, 613th CRG at Anderson AFB. I believe that squadron got absorbed by the wing years after I got out. I was a security forces troop. My two years there I served as a counter sniper on an SRT team.
