Default JK Automatic Transmission Linkage Bushing Fix

I was able to "fix" an unlinked AT linkage on my JK with ideas from this forum so, figured I'd upload some pics of how I went about mine. Bear in mind this is not the 4x4 transfer case linkage bushing issue, which appears to be much more common, but the actual linkage from the shifter on a 42RLE (same crappy design though) which left me stranded in Park for 2 hours yesterday.

One interesting thing is that Chrysler, in their infinite wisdom, does not sell bushings for this particular linkage - they instead want to sell you the entire cable for ~50 bucks, which I gladly passed.

Materials:
  • Wire Ties
  • Pliers
  • Bushing from 4x4 transfer case linkage (part# 68064273AA or AB

I'll spare you the write-up since this is a relatively simple fix and the pics speak for themselves but basically, after testing several generic bushings from AdvacedAutoParts (none of which worked) I ended using the $0.30 bushing replacement for a 4x4 transfer case linkage (which they do sell given the numerous reported failures). It is not the same bushing and it will not clip in place but it does help keep the connection snug AND has the added bonus of providing a pass-through for yet a third zip-tie as shown. I have cycled the shifter back and forth 12 consecutive times and so far so good so I hope it sticks.

I hope this helps somebody out there...and, thank you Chrysler for cutting corners in the wrong areas!

Thanks for the help! By any chance did you find the stock replacement bushing? My dealer wants me to buy the whole shift cable assembly, apparently they won't sell me the bushing alone.

A manly man always has a supply of zip ties. I keep a selection in the tool kit as well as t-case bushings even after switching to the Advance Adaptors cable.
Zip ties and duct tape keep the world turning

Let's say you pay about 10 cents per zip tie which may be the average price depending on how you buy them. You can repair your cable 500 times for the price of replacing it. Oh wait...maybe only 75 times if you use a new t-case bushing at 40 cents to repair the transmission cable at the same time

Default 2006 Wrangler TJ Auto-Trans Bushing Instead?

I wanted to jump in with an idea. The same 42RLE tranny is used in the previous TJ series, so why can't we use that plastic bushing?

Luckily they still sell it separately instead of the whole cable assembly on JK's. I found one on eBay for $7.00 shipped and bought it in case of emergency.

You can find the replacement bushings on Amazon, Rock Auto and 4WheelParts for around $5. I bought mine on Amazon and keep an extra around.
