After giving this build more thought, I am thinking about going a different direction completely. More expedition style...

5.13 gears for 37's on the new Pentastar? Did your Jeep come with the old 3.8 engine?!?

4.56 is standard, 4.88 would be above and beyond, 5.13 is just overkill.

His rig is going to be heavy. The build is for rock crawling. Those 37s are full size. He will be driving mountain passes and hills in CA.

Compared to 4.88s, 5.13s will turn his engine about 130 rpm faster at 70 mph than it would with 4.88s.

Is 130 more rpm overkill?

If he has a manual, 5.13s would turn about the same engine rpm at 70 mph as 4.88s would in an automatic. Is almost 0 more rpm at 70 mph with a manual compared to an automatic overkill?

Building heavy, with large 37s, to do rock crawling, and to drive the hills and mountains around where he lives, 4.56s would be a poor choice.

5.13s result in about 300 rpm more than 4.56s at 70 mph. Going with 5.13s results in more power due to the extra 300 rpm on the highway, better crawl ratios when in 4Lo, and better fuel economy in mountainous and hilly terrain because the transmission does not downshift as frequently.

^^^ planman, I thought he was going expedition style...? Usually that means a lightweight "green" build. I understand the need for low gearing, especially on rocks. But when traveling hundreds of miles across the country over-landing, I still believe 5.13 gears (5spd auto JKU) is still over-kill for an expedition build.

However, if it is going to be a heavy expedition Jeep, I'll agree with you that 4.88 would be the better choice over the 4.56 gears.

I did miss that post.

Expedition style is actually heavier and less aerodynamic--cargo racks, trailers, water tanks, extra gas containers, portable fridges and rooftop tents, etc.

The in the end, how much time will he spend over 70-75 mph, hand ow heavy will he carry or tow?

5.13s vs 4.88s are 130-136 rpm faster at 70 mph--depending on tranny type.

The economy lost by those extra 130-136 rpm on the highway results in better performance and economy in town and off road.

My bias is nearly always performance is more important than a minor improvement in freeway economy.

Another way to look at it: an automatic 12' with 37s and 4.88s with mud terrain tires will get worse freeway speed mpg than it would with 5.13s and all terrain tires.

The mud terrains result in about a 2 mpg drop over all terrains. An extra 130 rpm won't result in even a 1 mph drop at 70 mph.

Anyway, this is why he is likely considering 5.13s with 37s.

If he lived in Florida or Texas, traveled regularly at 80-85 mph, was light and aerodynamic, and didn't rock crawl, the 5.13s wouldn't be as much of an extra value compared to living in SoCal, running the Rubicon trail, wheeling at higher elevations, and driving hills and mountains in CA.
