Rock Krawler, Pintler, and 285/75/17
Rock Krawler, Pintler, and 285/75/17
I have a white 2008 4-door Rubicon Unlimited with a towing package and have two separate but related questions.
If I install the tires, wheels and lift below will I encounter any issues such as rubbing or police?
Lt285/75/17 BF Goodrich KM2 (a narrow 34" dia tire)
17x8.5 AEV Pintler Argent wheel (seems like an acceptably large backspacing, but not sure)
Rock Krawler Max Travel 2.5" Suspension (I like the capability but perhaps too much for the backspacing)
I'm trying to keep the tires "acceptably" legal by having them tucked under the stock fenders as best I can.
I'm from the Seattle Washington area and venture into British Columbia Canada once in a while.
Thanks in advace,
Ray J

Looks like your combination of a 285 width and a 1.5" spacer brings the outer face of the tire beyond the fender. I'm starting to think that a 285 width cannot be made to tuck completly under my stock fender without having problems off road. I'm wondering if "close to legal' is 100% acceptable, even in British Columbia.

I think you would have to run into one hell of a prick cop to bust you for a set of 285's on Pintlers. They should darn near be under the factory flairs... maybe sticking out hair.
I think it sounds like a great setup you have planned. I am planning on the same basic setup, but I am going to stick with the stock wheels and use some spacers. And I am having a hard time choosing between the 285-75-17's or the 305-70-17 (really pushing toward the 285's though... better for winter usage).

olyelr and All,
If my references are correct, my stock wheels have a -50.8mm offset and the Pintlers have a -10mm offset. The difference is 1.6 inch shift of the tire centerline in the outboard direction.
Going from a 255 to a 285 will add .6 inch more outboard. Current tire to outer fender distance is about 1.3 inches, so my stick-out will be about an inch outboard of the fender. It is this calculation that is stopping me from going to a 305 width.
I have to believe this is acceptable, but it is technically illegal in many places.
I would like to hear from a member from British Columbia.

The 305 width has significant advantages to the 285.
The 305 tread lugs are much larger. The voids are also better. This translates to better finger-like grip in rocks and mud. The larger voids will clean out better in the dirt/mud.
Before I bought, I put my bfg 305/65R17 next to a 285/70R17 and there was a lot of difference. Height was basically the same.

I'm running a 285/75/17 on RR wheels. They do stick out about 1 1/2" at the widest. Laws here say they can stick out 1". The rock krawler lift would be a great choice. When I can afford it that the lift I will be running.

I have read many good things about Dura Trac tires. My Pintlers are here, I have a plan for the lift, but I am second guessing the tire size and type. I think the Dura Tracs are what I need for the Seattle wet weather and near by snowy mountain passes and trails.
Would 285/70R17 Dura Tracs look slightly too small for a 2008 JKU with a Rock Krawler 2.5" max travel lift?

I run a 3.5" RK with 35s with Method Racing wheels with 4.75" back spacing. Off road, my tires rub on the lower control arms. I believe the Pinters are less back spacing than 4.75", so off road spacers will be needed. I had 285 nittos and quickly sold them because they looked dinky. IMO I think you'll be happier with the look of the 305s.
Best of luck on your decision.

I'm running the BDS 3" Lift with Pintler Wheels and BFG 315/70/17 (35's) -- No Rub -- when i had my stock flares they didn't stick out very much maybe 1/4" not enough to warrant the PO-PO to bug you ..
