Default 50K miles MPG data - every tankful 2012 JKUK

Thought I would post an update for anyone that cares. I keep detailed records of every fill up since I got my 2012 JKU with zero miles. It now has 50,000 miles, so I thought I would share my data with you. There are three plots. One is all of the data. One is with the data points removed when towing (since I tow a 5000 pound trailer for vacations), and one chart showing how the CPU MPG compares with hand calculation. The black line on each chart shows the average of the date on that chart. 2012 JKU. Manual trans. 3.73 rear. Rubi take-off tires/wheels. No other mods (except a recent addition of a Smittybilt rear bumper).

Sad observation from my data collection: I have now spent $11,100 in gas since buying this jeep. I've had it for 971 days. This calculates into $11.43 per day. I only have an 11 mile commute to work. I've probably towed my heavy trailer between 5000 - 6000 miles, which brings the MPG down to around 10-11 when towing. This really bumps up the average per day gasoline cost.

I agree about the gas consumption, but I've never been in a car/truck that I've wanted to spend so much time in. SO worth it.

I agree. No regrets. MPG about the same as the Mercury mountaineer I had. JKU is much more fun.

How the heck did you go from the worst mpg to the best mpg in 400 or 500 miles starting around the 17,600 mark with towing removed? Did you climb Mount Kilimanjaro or something?

That coincides with when my son Graduated Marine boot camp. MPG average went up because I had some 100% highway miles from NJ to South Carolina and back again.
One thing my data shows: you cannot make one mod then determine the effect on mpg by only looking at one or two fill ups. Too much scatter in the data.

I see. That's a big jump over 7 mpg.

Almost time to change spark plugs and see if it alters the numbers any. Just put some Iridiums in my pentastar and noticed an improvement over the last 5 tanks.

Probably add another buck-a-day for tires, too. But you can't put a price on happiness.

Thanks for sharing the data!

Any tips for doing the change? How long does it take?
