2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Leaked Image

In an epic lapse of security, Jeep has given us a wealth of information to examine and digest long before the 2018 Jeep Wrangler gets to showrooms.

The sharp folks over at JLWranglerForums.com have hit paydirt again. This time they’ve managed to leak the 2018 Jeep Wrangler owner’s manual and user guides. Usually an owner’s manual is something we avoid reading unless there’s a new light on the dashboard we haven’t seen before. But in this case, it’s a wealth of information about the features and options coming to us next year. There’s also a lot of confirmation of earlier information, but this gets us into the finer details. All the way to down to the new key fob.

The first thing of note is a good look at the new and utilitarian dashboard. The automatic transmission has a manual mode, and the guide shows both 2.0L and 3.6L engines. In the engine compartment diagram, there’s a coolant reservoir to serve a motor generator unit. We’re taking that as confirmation of a hybrid option.

Off-roaders will get a lot of control over the drivetrain. The gear selector has four modes covering two-wheel-drive high range, four-wheel-drive high range, four-wheel-drive low range, and neutral. There’s also a five-mode transfer case that adds four-wheel drive auto high range, and four-wheel drive part-time high range. 4WD Auto mode keeps engagement with the front axle, but only pushes power to the rear until the system detects the front is also needed.

The user guide shows us the Wrangler will have a removable soft top on offer as well as a Freedom hard top. There’s also a non-removable power sliding top on offer, but the rear-quarter windows can be removed.

If you’re thinking about a new Wrangler, or just interested, it’s worth a deep dive. Jeep is obviously putting everything they can into their next-generation icon.

His obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars. His first job was as a mechanic and then trained as a driving instructor before going into media production.

The automotive itch never left though, and he realized writing about cars is his true calling. However, that doesn’t stop him from also hosting the Both Hand Drive podcast.
