61K Jeep Cherokee Models Recalled Over Potential Transfer Unit Failure
Select 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee models are being recalled over failing two-speed transfer units that can bring the SUV to a complete halt.
Owners of certain Jeep models have faced their fair share of recalls over the years, which continue to be issued over problems ranging from somewhat minor to quite serious. This is simply the way of life in the automotive world, and in all fairness, it’s better to see an automaker recall a vehicle over a problem than try to gloss it over and leave owners out in the proverbial cold. As for those that own a Jeep Cherokee impacted by the latest recall, that’s definitely the case, given its severity.
This new recall affects a grand total of 61,711 different 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee models built between December 12, 2018, and February 24, 2023, and pertains to potential two-speed power transfer unit (PTU) failure. If failure occurs, it can result in a loss of drive power or a vehicle rollaway situation, which can obviously lead to a crash or injury. Prior to failure, the driver may notice a “Service 4WD” message, noise, vibration, or a change in the drive quality.
The faulty PCU was manufactured by Detroit-based supplier Dauch Corporation, under part numbers 68333255AB, 68333255AC, 68333255AD, and 68333255AE. After receiving reports of potential PTU input spline failures, Stellantis first issued a recall for select 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee models over this same issue back in 2020, and ultimately discovered – this past January – that newer models could be facing issues as well, and opted to issue this new recall to cover impacted models.
As for a fix, well, that’s still under development, but Jeep Cherokee customers impacted by the recall will begin receiving notification letters informing them of the risk starting June 25, 2026. Once a remedy is available, they’ll receive another letter, but it’s unclear at this time when that’s expected to happen.
In the meantime, owners can call Stellantis customer service at 1-800-853-1403 for more information, referencing recall number 40D, or they can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for more information.
