Fiat-Chrysler Recalls Select Jeep Models Over Braking Issue

Defective piston coatings could reduce braking performance in 2018 Jeep Cherokee and 2018/2019 Compass models.

Several instances of poor braking performance have been reported on 2018-2019 Jeep Compass and 2019 Cherokee models. But FIat Chrysler is wasting no time making things right. They’ve generated a recall for those select vehicles, along with 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan and 2018 Journey models. Altogether, the recall affects roughly 154,000 vehicles in total.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing, the exact issue relates to rear brake caliper pistons. These parts may have “out-of-specification chrome coating on the pistons.” That insufficient coating can cause gas pockets to form, which could in turn reduce rear brake performance. And that, of course, could increase the likelihood of a crash.

Owners of the affected models may experience some symptoms of the problem. They include increased brake travel or a soft pedal feel upon starting the vehicle. The good news, of course, is that the fix for this issue is simple and free for owners. Dealers only have to bleed the brake system and replace the brake fluid to rectify the problem.

The NHTSA expects the recall to begin on September 28, 2018. FCA will contact the owners of affected vehicles directly in the coming weeks. Customers are also encouraged to call Chrysler customer service with any concerns at 1-800-853-1403. The reference recall number is U86. Alternatively, owners can call the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153). Or, simply click here for more information.

As always, if you experience the symptoms of this issue on your Jeep, it’s best to park it if possible until repairs can be completed.
