Funter Concept Takes Steering to New Level

The Funter Is an Off-Roader With Four-Wheel Steering Straight Out of Your Video Game Fantasies

If you’ve ever played Halo, you know about the Warthog, the futuristic military successor to the Jeep and Humvee. One of the coolest features of that truck was its independent four-wheel steering capability. It made driving the Warthog a lot of fun, despite the fact that Halo was, or course, supposed to be a shooting game.

So how well does independent four-wheel steering translate to real life? While it’s been tried many times over the years. This latest attempt, called the Funter, features some very Jeep-like proportions, albeit much uglier. However, you’ll soon forget about its looks when you see it in action.

Designed and built by the Polish Engineers of the Automotive Industry Institute, the Funter features axles that can turn independently of each other. This, combined with its short wheelbase, makes for impressive maneuverability. The Funter is able to turn in place, crab-walk, and make very tight turns with ease.

The Funter is also equipped with some pretty aggressive rolling stock and a long-travel suspension. While specific details about this truck’s chassis, suspension, and drivetrain are pretty thin, one thing’s for sure: it can probably handle just about anything you throw at it. But we’re only judging by the short video clip above.

We’d like to see what the Funter could do on a trail. It appears that it would be pretty difficult to get this thing stuck or wedged any place. It seems like it would do a great job of getting itself out of any trouble you could possibly steer it into.
