How-To Tuesday: Building a Custom Fan Shroud
For those of us that have done extensive work to our rigs, a custom fan shroud should be a given. Not only does it dress up the engine bay nicely, but it also maximizes the cooling efficiency of your radiator. If you’re on the fence about taking this on as a DIY project, take a look at the Two-Minute Tech video below. With some simple sheet metal tools and good measurements, it turns into a fairly easy project.
Measuring is always the top priority, and Two-Minute Tech uses the existing radiator fan as the arch template. Knowing that the engine moves around on its mounts, they trace the arch accordingly. They also account for how the shroud will be mounted. Once you’ve done your tracing, most sheet metal can be cut with a band saw. The only tricky part is making the arch for the finger guard. In the vid, they use a metal shrinker/stretcher tool to force the metal into a fixed radius. Luckily there’s no need for welding at this point, once the shroud and finger guard are complete, they can simply be riveted together and installed in the car.
