Hybrid Wrangler in the Future?

The next generation Jeep Wrangler is a hot button issue right now. Everyone seems to be worried about whether or not it will become a unibody, instead of the more rugged body-on-frame construction, even though it’s been flatly denied.

The new Wrangler will, however, get an all new aluminum body that will reduce weight and improve fuel mileage. Along with that, the next generation will also likely get the ZF 8-speed that’s become fairly common among all of Chrysler’s products.

While that’s all good, perhaps more interesting are Jeep’s CEO Mike Manley’s comments regarding a hybrid Wrangler. Speaking with AutoExpress recently, Manley conveyed that the company has looked into using some form of hybrid powertrain for the next Wrangler.

Apparently though, using a hybrid motor has its issues: “Where you have to be careful with the Wrangler is range,” said Manely. “If you are eight hours and four miles into a trail, there is not a hybrid that we could do which could provide the battery support.”

But Manley did express that it still is a possibility for the future since a hybrid motor would give the new Wrangler unprecedented torque immediately, which would absolutely be welcomed by those that off-road.

The next Wrangler is still a few years out, but what do you all think? Should Jeep keep looking into a hybrid powertrain for the Wrangler?
