Is Jeep Losing Its Off-Roading Way?

With so many of Jeep’s new products being more cautiously aimed at the street — take for instance the new Renegade, the new Grand Cherokee, the upcoming TrackHawk, among others — is Jeep in danger of losing its claim to fame? Are Jeeps becoming too suburban and less go anywhere with the wind in your face?

We’re currently hearing that Mercedes, of all people, wants to build a convertible SUV, a marketplace that was previously only taken by the likes of Jeep. Is that because Jeep is opening itself up to competition? There just seems to be less detail these days going into their product lineup, specifically in regards to that go anywhere renegade spirit. Sure, you still have all the cool stuff that Jeep brings to the Easter Safari in Moab, but for the most part, those are all just highly modified Wranglers. Is it time for more drop-top Jeeps?

What about a Jeep Renegade with a Wrangler esque roof? Or maybe a Wrangler-fied Cherokee? Wouldn’t those be super cool? Jeep actually made one in 2007 that had removable roof panels, maybe they could revive the concept?

The Cherokee and Grand Cherokee are already fairly promising off-roaders with the right bit of kit, but I feel like they could go even further.

What do you all think, is Jeep straying too far from its roots?
