Moab-Bound Willys CJ Takes First Steps

Easter Jeep Safari Willys CJ project might make it to Moab after all.

Never say never, right?

Regardless of how often you hear it, that adage just always seems relevant — even when it comes to the world of Jeep. Take Jalopnik’s David Tracy, for example. Because after all the doubts we’ve had about him pulling off that seemingly unsalvageable Willys project, he’s crossed another amazing hurdle as he scrambles to get the Jeep ready to drive to Moab.

Hey, it’s not like we haven’t supported our fellow Jeep lover. It’s just that he’s also has had his doubts. But things are definitely looking up.

As we reported last week, David was finally able to get the Jeep started, with the help of a couple of friends. But now there’s actually video of him driving the ’48 Willys on the road, as you can below. It’s the biggest sign of hope we’ve gotten yet that David might actually make the trip after all.

“The first test drive went OK,” says David. “We got the Jeep up to about 45 mph with plenty of throttle left. Which is surprising, since the engine only made 60 psi of compression before our rebuild. Maybe those new rings made all the difference.”

However, the Jalopnik Jeep lover still has some work ahead before he’s scheduled to hit the road to make that April 8 deadline, when all the festivities kickoff in Moab.

David says he’s still having some issues with the Jeep’s second gear, which means the transmission might have to be rebuilt. And he also has to figure out a way to fasten the body down to the frame.

Here’s hoping he figures it out! We’ll certainly be following along.
