Take a Deep Dive Into the All-New 2018 Wrangler

Wrangler skeptic can’t stop talking about how ‘cool’ the 2018 JL generation is.

If you’ve ever watched a review from YouTuber Doug DeMuro, you know he’s incredibly detailed. He’s made a name for himself for not just reviewing some of the most interesting vehicles on the market, but also as a guy that pays attention to every last nook and cranny of a car. So, when he takes a look at the all-new 2018 Wrangler, you know that he’s going to take his time dissecting the first major Jeep redesign in over a decade.

2018 Jeep Wrangler at Los Angeles Auto Show

Doug starts his review by going over the new quirks and exterior bits of the Wrangler. First off, as anyone who follows the news surrounding the 2018s knows, the Wrangler has three roof options. Each one is showcased in the video. We all know what the hardtop looks like, and not much has changed. The soft top looks just as you might guess, but with a few new touches. Now, you can pretty much take off the soft top with one hand, as Doug demonstrates. The real exciting roof option, at least for DeMuro, is the power top. The power top opens as if the whole top of the Jeep is a sunroof, but with the added option of popping out the rear windows for a true Jeep feel.

After spending quite a bit of time detailing everything from the new headlights, taillights, and rear camera system, he talks about what might be the most striking change to the exterior of the Jeep, the lack of branding. The front grille, which for decades has been adorned with the Jeep badge has now been redesigned. Gone is the Jeep branding, with just the clean, trademark grille design left. According to Jeep, the grille is the brand, not the logo, so they cleaned it up to showcase the design.

After watching about half of the video review, a couple things start to become readily apparent. One, Doug loves saying the word “cool,” in describing the new Wrangler. And two, Doug isn’t your typical Wrangler person. As he describes all the changes and new additions to the interior, you can tell that Jeep is starting to change the hearts and minds of those non-Wrangler people with this new 2018 model.

He starts raving about the interior by being amazed that a rugged, waterproof interior could look so nice. This isn’t the old days of the CJ and YJ Wranglers where the interior was an afterthought. The 2018 has the full infotainment system, nice finishes, and even a waterproof subwoofer if you upgrade to the 9-speaker sound system.

DeMuro ends his review with actually driving the Wrangler. This is when he says some controversial statements. He calls the Wrangler a typical SUV in how it drives, knowing full well that Wrangler people love the way the Jeep drives in comparison to the grocery-getter SUVs like the Honda Pilot. This makes the 2018 Wrangler an SUV that he said he might actually want to drive.

The moral of the story, and major takeaway of the review is simple — the 2018 Wrangler is the best Wrangler to date. Jeep is using the 2018 Wrangler to show they can create a Jeep that is as rugged as ever, with the focus on off-road driving, but also something you would not feel bad about driving on the highway or with a family. This is the best of both worlds, and a worthy successor to the amazing lineage of Jeep.
