How-To Tuesday: JK Key Problems

One of the difficult parts of DIYing any vehicle in today’s market is that technology is built into everything. That certainly doesn’t get skipped on the JK. You used to get a key, you stuck it in the ignition, and off you went. You didn’t have security back-ups built into a key fob. All that said, the technology makes sense and hopefully keeps our cars from driving off without us, which is good. But what happens when your key needs to be replaced?
Interestingly the key isn’t much different than other electronic parts on your Jeep. There are times where you may need to do some searching for gremlins. The keys are starting to have as many components fit into them as anything else out there. So what happens if your Jeep won’t start?

This week’s How-To Tuesday article goes into detail about a things that you may come across in regards to getting your key issues figured out. The process isn’t difficult, but there are several steps that you’ll need to go through in order to get moving again.
One piece of advice that I would shoot your way is to always keep a spare key set ready to go. You’ll almost always get two keys with a new car purchase, but it can be rare to get two keys in a used vehicle purchase. So I would recommend that the first thing you do, if you’re in that boat, is take the linked article and follow the steps and procedures to get a second key.
Have you been through this process? What was your biggest hurdle or challenge?
